Since 1998 Full Professor of Economics at Bonn University and Director of the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA Bonn). President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin, since 2000) and Honorary Professor of Economics at the Free University of Berlin (since 2001). Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London (since 1990), Associate Research Fellow of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels (since 2001), Research Associate of the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies (CCIS) at the University of California-San Diego (since 2001), and member of the "Group of Economic Analysis" (GEA) to the President of the EU Commission (since 2001).

Special research interests: Labor economics, population economics, migration, industrial organization, econometrics.
